UT2 Training

UT2 Training: UT2 (Utilisation Training 2) is a low-intensity aerobic rowing zone performed at 55-70% of heart rate reserve, forming the foundation of endurance training for rowers.

What is UT2 Training?

UT2 is the lowest intensity training zone in the British Rowing classification system. It targets the development of aerobic base fitness through long, steady efforts at conversational pace. Most elite rowing programs prescribe 60-80% of total training volume at UT2 intensity. The physiological benefits include increased mitochondrial density, improved fat oxidation, enhanced capillarisation, and greater cardiac stroke volume. UT2 sessions are typically 40-90 minutes at 18-22 strokes per minute, with heart rate in the 55-70% HRR range. A key indicator of proper UT2 intensity is the ability to maintain a conversation while rowing. Despite its low intensity, UT2 training is the single most important component of rowing fitness development.

How Watta Uses UT2 Training

Watta identifies steady-state and UT2 sessions through heart rate zone analysis and workout duration. The Effort Score accounts for the sustained nature of UT2 work through the duration factor in the Work Output component, ensuring long aerobic sessions are properly valued.
