Everything You Need to Train Smarter
Watta is a purpose-built rowing analytics platform. Every feature is designed around how rowers actually train — from AI-powered data capture to a scoring system that understands what makes a good session on the erg.
AI OCR Capture
Snap your screen. Done.
Finish your piece, then photograph your PM5 screen — or upload an erg photo or screenshot from your gallery, even one taken weeks ago — and Watta does the rest. The screen reader extracts distance, time, average split, stroke rate and full interval breakdowns, plus watts, heart rate, calories and drag factor when the monitor shows them. Every value is shown for review before the workout saves, and anything read with low confidence is flagged. No Bluetooth pairing, no manual entry, no extra hardware.
Built for Concept2 performance monitors: the PM5 on the RowErg, SkiErg and BikeErg, and the older PM3 and PM4 screens. Other brands' monitors are not supported by the reader; those sessions can be entered by hand. Camera and gallery upload paths both compress images before sending, so capture is fast even on slower connections.
Effort Score (0-100)
One number that captures how hard you actually worked.
Every workout receives a proprietary composite score from 0 to 100, built from four dimensions of performance:
Your average heart rate as a fraction of heart-rate reserve (Karvonen), scaled non-linearly so 90% of reserve counts far more than 70%, with a small age credit. Without heart rate, a conservative power-based estimate capped at 28 points.
Average watts relative to a 150 W baseline for a 75 kg rower, scaled for your body weight with the Concept2 0.222 exponent, multiplied by a logarithmic duration factor — so both power and duration count, with diminishing returns on length.
Split consistency across intervals (coefficient of variation) with a 3-point bonus for a negative split. A single continuous piece scores 10 of 15.
Watts per stroke. Higher-rate work earns more effort credit — over 8 W per stroke scores 6, over 6 scores 8, otherwise 10.
Effort Zones
Heart Rate Zone Analysis
Five personalised zones that actually reflect your fitness.
Watta calculates five heart rate zones using the Karvonen method, which factors in your resting heart rate alongside your maximum. This produces zones that are personalised to your aerobic fitness level rather than just your age. Each piece with heart rate is labelled by the zone its average falls in; when an interval screen includes per-interval heart rate, you also get an estimated time-in-zone breakdown from those interval averages. Heart rate is read from the monitor photo when a strap is paired to the PM5, or arrives with a Concept2 Logbook import.
Why does this matter? Simple percentage-of-max formulas treat a sedentary beginner and an elite athlete as identical if they share the same max heart rate. Karvonen zones account for heart rate reserve, so your Zone 2 ceiling actually reflects your fitness. For UT2 training, where the boundary between aerobic base building and threshold work determines the quality of your session, this accuracy is essential.
Clubs & Squads
Train together, compete together.
Create or join clubs to connect with your rowing community. Organise members into squads for sub-groups — a university boat club might have a Men's 1st VIII squad, a Women's Development squad, and a Novice squad, each with its own feed and leaderboard.
Invite teammates with a simple invite code. See club-wide and squad-level leaderboards, share workouts on a social feed, and track how your crew is training. Mark close friends to share more detailed training data with the people who matter most.
Personal Bests & Streaks
Every milestone tracked. Every record remembered.
Watta automatically tracks personal bests across all standard distances and time pieces. When you set a new PB, you know immediately.
Earn 30 achievement badges across five categories: metres rowed, sessions completed, PBs set, training patterns, and social milestones. Streak tracking counts consecutive weeks with at least one logged workout, with an automatic freeze for one missed week per four-week block so a single rest week does not break your run.
Strava Sync
Rowing depth in Watta. Social reach on Strava.
Connect your Strava account and every workout you log in Watta is automatically pushed to your Strava activity feed. Your rowing sessions appear alongside your runs, rides, and other activities so your training picture stays complete.
Watta handles the rowing-specific analytics — Effort Score, heart rate zones, pacing breakdowns — while Strava handles the social layer your friends and followers already use. A separate read-only connection to the Concept2 Logbook imports the workouts you upload there, so sessions captured with ErgData land in Watta too.
Free, Forever
No subscription. No paywall. No ads.
Watta is completely free. There is no premium tier, no feature gating, no trial period, and no advertising. Every feature on this page is available to every user from day one.
We believe training tools should reduce friction, not create new costs. Your data is yours, your experience is uninterrupted, and the app stays focused on one thing: helping you train smarter.
Every erg counts.
