A Rowing App with Analytics for Concept2 Ergs

Watta is a free iPhone rowing app with analytics for Concept2 ergs. It reads the PM5 screen from a photo, scores every session 0-100 (Cardiac Load, Work Output, Pacing, Economy), labels it by heart-rate zone, keeps personal bests per distance and machine, shares sessions with your club or squad, and syncs to Strava.

It is not the only rowing app worth having. This page sorts the apps by the job you need done: Watta for logging from a photo and post-session analysis; ErgData for live Concept2 data and Logbook uploads; the Concept2 Logbook for rankings and lifetime metres; Strava for social sharing; Whoop for recovery. Most serious rowers use two of these together. Watta is our own app, so the head-to-heads below say plainly where each alternative wins.

Five Situations, Five Answers

  • You forgot to pair before the piece. Photograph the PM5 summary screen and log it afterwards — Watta reads it, and so do ErgScan and ErgTracker. See apps that work with erg screenshots.
  • You have a camera roll full of old erg photos. Watta accepts gallery uploads and lets you set the workout date, so weeks-old photos still log properly.
  • You want live force curves and the official record. ErgData over Bluetooth, uploading to the Concept2 Logbook. Watta then imports those workouts through a read-only Logbook connection — see how to sync the Logbook with other apps.
  • Your squad wants to see each other's sessions. Watta clubs and squads: an invite code, a shared feed and leaderboards by Effort Score, distance or time.
  • You row on something other than a Concept2. Photo readers are built for Concept2 monitors. Use the machine's own app (WaterRower Connect, Hydrow) or log manually.

How to Choose a Rowing App

  1. Capture: Do you want to log from a photo of the screen (Watta, ErgScan, ErgTracker), Bluetooth sync during the piece (ErgData, Kinomap, Regatta), or manual entry (Concept2 Logbook)?
  2. Analytics: Do you need rowing-specific metrics like split trends, watts, and heart rate zones?
  3. Device: Are you on iOS, Android, Apple Watch, or a wearable like Whoop?
  4. Community: Do you want rankings, leaderboards, or social sharing?
  5. Price: Are you looking for a free app, or willing to pay for premium features?

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best rowing app in 2026?
It depends on the job. For logging from a photo and scoring every workout 0-100, Watta (our app). For live PM5 data and force curves, ErgData. For official rankings and lifetime metres, the Concept2 Logbook. For social sharing, Strava. Most serious rowers run two of these together.
What is the best free rowing app?
ErgData and the Concept2 Logbook are completely free. Watta is also free on iOS. Strava and Whoop have free tiers but charge for full analytics.
Can I use multiple rowing apps at once?
Yes. Many rowers use ErgData to capture and upload workouts, the Concept2 Logbook for rankings, Watta for analytics, and Strava for social sharing. Each app does one thing well.
Does Watta work with Apple Watch?
Alongside it, not with it. Watta reads your Concept2 workout from a photo of the PM5 screen; it does not import Apple Watch or Apple Health heart rate. Pair a strap to the PM5 (or a watch that broadcasts heart rate) so it shows on the screen, and Watta reads it from the photo for zones and Effort Score.
