Split Time
What is Split Time?
Split time is the most fundamental metric in indoor rowing. It represents your current or average pace as the time required to cover 500 metres. A lower split time means you are rowing faster. For example, a 2:00.0 split means you would cover 500m in exactly 2 minutes. Split time has a cubic relationship with power output (watts) — small improvements in split time require significantly more energy. Going from a 2:00 to a 1:55 split represents a much larger power increase than going from 2:10 to 2:05. Most Concept2 monitors display split time as the primary pace metric, making it the universal language of erg performance.
How Watta Uses Split Time
Watta extracts your split time directly from erg screen photos using AI-powered OCR. Your split feeds into the Work Output component of the Effort Score algorithm, which accounts for 35% of your total score. Watta also tracks your split across sessions to show pace trends over time.
