Pace per 500m is synonymous with split time in rowing — it is the universal way rowers express speed on an ergometer. Unlike running, which uses per-mile or per-kilometre pace, rowing standardised on the 500m distance because it corresponds to the approximate length of a rowing course start or race segment. Every Concept2 monitor displays pace per 500m as the primary metric. The relationship between pace and power is cubic: pace = (2.80/watts)^(1/3) × 500. This means each second of pace improvement requires progressively more power. Pace per 500m allows instant comparison between rowers and across workout types.
