Rowing Power Output: Rowing power output is the rate of work produced during each stroke, measured in watts, and is the primary objective measure of rowing intensity on an ergometer.

What is Rowing Power Output?

Power output in rowing is calculated from the flywheel deceleration curve on a Concept2 ergometer. The PM5 measures flywheel velocity during and after each stroke, then computes the work done per stroke. The standard formula relating power to pace is: Watts = 2.80 / (pace in seconds per metre)³. For example, a 2:00/500m split equals approximately 203 watts, while a 1:40/500m split produces about 350 watts. Power is the most objective measure of rowing effort because, unlike split time (which is derived from power), it scales linearly and is unaffected by drag factor settings. Tracking power output over time is the best way to measure fitness improvements, set training targets, and compare performance across sessions.
