2K Test

By the Watta Team · Updated

2K Test: A 2K test is a 2,000-metre maximal effort rowing ergometer test — the standard benchmark for indoor rowing performance, used for team selection and fitness assessment.

What is 2K Test?

The 2K erg test is the gold standard of indoor rowing performance. It takes most trained rowers 6-8 minutes to complete, requiring a brutal combination of aerobic and anaerobic capacity. Nearly every rowing program worldwide uses the 2K time as the primary selection metric. The test demands careful pacing strategy — going out too fast leads to catastrophic slowdown, while being too conservative leaves time on the table. Most coaches recommend a negative or even split strategy, starting at target pace and building through the second 1000m. The 2K test is physiologically one of the most demanding tests in sport, with athletes reaching 95-100% of their VO2 max and maximum heart rate.

How Watta Uses 2K Test

Watta automatically detects 2K tests from your erg screen data and gives them the highest workout type weight in the legacy effort score calculation. Your 2K times are tracked as personal bests and used to contextualize your training paces across all sessions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good 2K erg time?
For men: sub-7:00 is competitive club level, sub-6:30 is elite collegiate, and sub-6:00 is international level. For women: sub-8:00 is competitive club, sub-7:15 is elite collegiate, and sub-6:45 is international level.
How often should I do a 2K test?
Most programs test every 4-8 weeks. Testing too frequently does not allow enough time for training adaptations and can lead to burnout or injury from repeated maximal efforts.
What is the best pacing strategy for a 2K?
Most coaches recommend an even or slightly negative split strategy. Start at your target pace for the first 500m, hold steady through 1000m, push slightly from 1000-1500m, and sprint the final 500m.
How does a 2K time relate to a 5K time?
By Paul’s Law the sustainable split slows about 5 seconds per 500m each time the distance doubles, which puts a 5K roughly 6.6 seconds per 500m slower than a 2K. A 7:00 2K predicts about 18:36 (1:51.6/500m) for 5K; an 8:00 2K about 21:06 (2:06.6/500m). It is a rule of thumb: rowers with a big aerobic base beat it, sprint-heavy rowers fall short.
What stroke rate should I row a 2K at?
Most trained rowers hold 30–36 strokes per minute, starting a few beats higher for the first 20 strokes and settling into the race rate. Newer rowers often go faster at 26–30 with a longer, stronger stroke than by rating high with less power on each one.
Can I estimate my VO2 max from a 2K?
Yes. Concept2 publishes a formula that estimates VO2 max from 2K power and body weight, with separate versions for highly trained and less trained rowers. The rowing VO2 max estimator applies it; treat the result as an estimate, not a lab measurement.
