Coaching Notes
- +Target split is typically 15-20 seconds above your 2K split.
- +Keep stroke rate at 22-24 spm. Going higher burns glycogen too quickly.
- +Break the 10K into five 2K segments rather than thinking about the total distance.
- +Posture will deteriorate around 6K-8K. Set a mental alarm to reset body position.
- +Nutrition matters for this test — have a light carbohydrate snack 60-90 minutes beforehand.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a good 10K erg time?
For men: sub-38:00 is strong recreational, sub-35:00 is competitive club, sub-33:00 is elite. For women: sub-42:00 is strong recreational, sub-39:00 is competitive club, sub-37:00 is elite.
How do I stay focused for 35-50 minutes?
Break the test into segments, use music or mental mantras, and focus on process cues (leg drive, body position) rather than watching the distance count down. Many rowers cover the monitor display between segments.
Should I eat before a 10K test?
Yes, have a light carbohydrate-rich meal or snack 60-90 minutes before. Your body needs glycogen for a sustained effort of this duration. Avoid high-fat or high-fibre foods.
