Foot Stretcher

By the Watta Team · Updated

Foot Stretcher: The foot stretcher is the adjustable footplate on a rowing machine where the rower's feet are strapped in, with correct positioning critical for technique and power.

What is Foot Stretcher?

The foot stretcher (or footplate) on the Concept2 erg is an adjustable plate with straps where the rower secures their feet. It can be raised or lowered to accommodate different shoe sizes and leg proportions. The correct setting positions the strap across the ball of the foot (the widest part). If set too high, you lose ankle flexibility at the catch; too low, and you cannot compress fully. Foot stretcher height affects your entire stroke mechanics — it determines the angle of your shins at the catch and the range of motion available during the drive. Many rowers set it once and never adjust, but optimising foot stretcher position can meaningfully improve comfort and power output.

How Watta Uses Foot Stretcher

Foot stretcher setup affects technique efficiency, which influences the power output and stroke economy that Watta captures. Proper setup contributes to consistent splits and efficient Economy scores.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where should the strap be on my foot?
Across the ball of the foot — the widest part, near the base of the toes. This allows full ankle flexion at the catch and a strong push-off from the foot during the drive.
How do I adjust the foot stretcher on a Concept2?
Pull the spring-loaded pin on each footplate and slide it up or down. The PM5 has 1-5 height settings. Most adults use position 3-4. Taller rowers with larger feet use position 4-5.
Can foot stretcher position cause knee pain?
Yes. If set too low, shins go past vertical at the catch, stressing the knees. If set too high, ankles cannot flex properly, creating awkward knee angles. Experiment with 1-2 position adjustments if you experience knee discomfort.
