Rowing Power Curve

By the Watta Team · Updated

Rowing Power Curve: The power curve (or power profile) plots a rower's best average watts across different durations, revealing strengths and weaknesses in the aerobic-anaerobic spectrum.

What is Rowing Power Curve?

The rowing power curve is a graph plotting your best sustained power output (watts) against time or distance. At one end is your peak power (a few strokes), and at the other is your sustained aerobic power (60+ minutes). The curve reveals your physiological profile: a steep drop-off from peak to sustained power indicates an anaerobic/sprint profile, while a flat curve indicates a strong aerobic base. Comparing your power curve to normative data identifies whether you need more sprint work or more endurance training. Most recreational rowers have a power curve that drops too steeply — indicating insufficient aerobic base — which is why steady state training produces the biggest improvements for most people.

How Watta Uses Rowing Power Curve

Watta tracks your power output across sessions of different durations, building a personal power profile over time. By comparing your Effort Scores and watts across different workout lengths, you can identify whether your training is developing a balanced power curve or creating imbalances.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I build my power curve?
Test at multiple durations: 100m (peak power), 500m (anaerobic), 2K (VO2 max), 5K (threshold), and 10K+ (aerobic). Plot watts for each. The resulting curve shows where you are strong and where you need development.
What does a flat power curve mean?
A flat curve (small drop from short to long duration) indicates excellent aerobic fitness and endurance. This is typical of experienced, well-trained rowers who have done significant steady state volume.
What does a steep power curve mean?
A steep curve (large drop from short to long duration) indicates strong sprint power but weak endurance. This is common in beginners and CrossFit athletes who do mostly intervals. More steady state volume will flatten the curve and improve all-round performance.
