WaterRower

By the Watta Team · Updated

WaterRower: WaterRower is a rowing ergometer brand that uses a water-filled flywheel tank to create natural, variable resistance that simulates the feel of rowing on water.

What is WaterRower?

The WaterRower is a distinctive rowing machine that uses a paddle spinning in a water-filled tank to generate resistance. As you row harder, the paddle moves faster through the water, creating progressively more resistance — mimicking the feel of an oar in water. WaterRowers are known for their attractive wooden construction (typically American ash or oak), quiet operation, and compact upright storage. The resistance feel differs from air-resistance machines like the Concept2: the catch feels lighter, the drive builds progressively, and the overall sensation is smoother. However, WaterRower metrics are not directly comparable to Concept2 metrics because the resistance mechanisms are fundamentally different.

How Watta Uses WaterRower

Watta is built for the Concept2 ecosystem and does not currently support WaterRower machines. The AI OCR is trained to read the Concept2 PM5 monitor. WaterRower users looking for erg tracking should use the WaterRower Connect companion app or consider a Concept2 for access to Watta's analytics.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use Watta with a WaterRower?
No. Watta's AI OCR is designed to read the Concept2 PM5 monitor display. WaterRower machines use the S4 or SmartRow monitor, which has a different format. Watta is specifically built for Concept2 ergometers.
Is a WaterRower better than a Concept2?
It depends on your priorities. WaterRower is quieter, aesthetically attractive, and has a natural water-feel resistance. Concept2 is the global competition standard, has universally comparable metrics, and is more widely used in gyms and clubs. For serious performance tracking, Concept2 is preferred.
Why are WaterRower metrics not comparable to Concept2?
The two machines use different resistance mechanisms — water versus air. The resistance curves, calibration methods, and power calculations differ, meaning the same split time represents different power outputs. Only Concept2 metrics are used in official indoor rowing competitions and rankings.
