Coaching Notes
- +Each partner rows 3 x 500m with roughly 2 minutes of rest while the other rows.
- +The competitive element naturally pushes both partners to work harder.
- +Adjust split targets based on the less experienced partner — this should be fun, not intimidating.
- +If fitness levels differ significantly, the stronger partner can row 600m while the other rows 400m.
- +Track both partners' totals in Watta and compare progress over time.
Frequently Asked Questions
What if our fitness levels are very different?
Adjust the distances asymmetrically — the fitter partner rows 600m while the other rows 400m. Alternatively, the fitter partner can row at a lower intensity. The goal is shared effort and enjoyment.
Can we do this with two ergs?
Yes — with two ergs, both partners row simultaneously. Use the same interval structure but row at the same time for a side-by-side race format.
Is this a good workout for beginners?
Excellent. The built-in rest periods prevent overexertion, and having a partner provides motivation and accountability. The 500m distance is short enough to maintain good technique throughout.
