Power Intervals 10x200m
By the Watta Team · Updated
Advanced30 minRowErg
Ten 200-metre intervals at near-maximal power with generous rest. This session develops peak power output and explosive leg drive, targeting the fast-twitch muscle fibres essential for race starts and sprint finishes.

| 2 min | Very easy | - | Light strokes, deep breathing |
Coaching Notes
- +Each 200m takes roughly 25-35 seconds — make every stroke count.
- +The focus is peak wattage, not just fast split. Monitor watts on the PM5 if possible.
- +The 1:30 rest allows substantial but not complete recovery — power should remain high throughout.
- +Rate should be 34-38 spm. At this short distance, high rate is necessary for peak power.
- +If your split degrades by more than 5 seconds from your best rep, the session is done.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why 200m and not 100m or 250m?
Two hundred metres is the sweet spot for power development — long enough to require sustained effort (25-35 seconds) but short enough to maintain near-maximal power throughout. It trains the phosphocreatine and glycolytic energy systems effectively.
How do I measure peak power?
The PM5 displays watts in real time. For this session, note the peak and average watts per rep. Over weeks, you should see these numbers increase as power develops.
Should I do power intervals year-round?
Power work is most effective when built on a solid aerobic base. Include 1-2 power sessions per week during racing season, and reduce to maintenance frequency (1 per fortnight) during base-building phases.
